jfid – The United States (US) has taken a divergent stance from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Despite being recognized as close allies, the US is actively supporting the establishment of a Palestinian state, embodying the essence of the “two-state solution.”

On Thursday, January 18, 2024, Netanyahu asserted that the establishment of a Palestinian state post-Gaza war would jeopardize the security of his nation. Netanyahu has even expressed his objections to the US.

Nevertheless, Netanyahu remains confident that the normalization of relations between Israel and several Arab countries can be achieved without the existence of a Palestinian state.

In response to Netanyahu’s concerns, Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the US Department of State, stated that Israel need not worry about security if a Palestinian state materializes in the future. According to Miller, security assurances could come from neighboring countries surrounding Israel.

“There is no way to address long-term challenges without ensuring lasting security,” Miller emphasized.

Miller also added, “It is impossible to tackle short-term challenges like rebuilding Gaza, establishing governance there, and providing security without the existence of a Palestinian state.”

Previously, the US consistently reaffirmed its support for the two-state solution as a way out of the Israel-Palestine crisis. Despite the disagreement with Netanyahu, US support for Israel as its close ally remains steadfast.

Miller stressed, “It’s not about the US instructing them to do this or that. It’s about the US providing the opportunities they have.”

The US decision to support the establishment of a Palestinian state underscores its firm commitment to seeking peace in the Middle East.
