According to the UNHCR Representative in Indonesia, Ann Maymann, Rohingya refugees entered Indonesia starting in 2015, then in 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2022.

She stated that UNHCR Indonesia works closely with local authorities and other partners to meet the basic needs of Rohingya refugees, such as shelter, healthcare, education, and financial allowances.

Maymann explained that every Rohingya refugee rescued by Basarnas and Aceh fishermen is registered, documented, and given an identity card by UNHCR.

This identity card serves to protect them from deportation or being sent back to their home country, Myanmar, which is experiencing a political and humanitarian crisis. Additionally, it enables them to receive humanitarian aid from IOM and UNHCR.

Maymann mentioned that IOM and UNHCR provide a monthly allowance of IDR 1.25 million per person to Rohingya refugees. This allowance is used to purchase daily necessities like food, beverages, clothing, and hygiene items.

Moreover, IOM and UNHCR also provide healthcare facilities such as medical check-ups, vaccinations, and therapy. They also offer educational facilities such as elementary schools, secondary schools, and Indonesian language courses.

Maymann stated that the humanitarian efforts by Indonesia, IOM, and UNHCR aim to provide protection and long-term solutions for Rohingya refugees.

She mentioned that the hoped-for long-term solution is voluntary repatriation to Myanmar once conditions there are safe and stable. However, if that’s not possible, another potential solution could be local integration in Indonesia or relocation to a third country willing to accept them.
