jifd – In an effort to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2060, Indonesia has partnered with Finland as a strategic ally in developing green energy technologies.

This collaboration is significant given Finland’s expertise in various renewable energy technologies that have proven to be efficient and sustainable.

Development of Renewable Energy

Finland is known for its extensive expertise in renewable energy development, including solar, hydro, geothermal, wind, as well as ocean and hydrogen energy.

These technologies offer immense potential for implementation in Indonesia, a country rich in natural resources but still heavily reliant on fossil fuels.

A pilot biomass processing project in Merauke, Papua, stands as a concrete example of this collaboration’s potential. The project aims to reduce diesel fuel consumption by up to 27.5 million liters over five years.

“This partnership will not only reduce carbon emissions but also promote sustainable development in remote areas,” said Dr. Joko Winarno, a renewable energy expert from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).

Flexible Gas-Based Balancing Power Plants

In addition to renewable energy, Finland offers flexible gas-based balancing power plant technology.

This technology is crucial for balancing the variability of renewable energy sources like wind and solar, which are often inconsistent.

With these power plants, Indonesia’s electricity supply security can be maintained, representing a significant step forward in global climate change mitigation.

“The use of this technology is expected to enhance the stability of Indonesia’s electricity grid, which is frequently disrupted by energy supply uncertainties,” said Mika Lintilä, Finland’s Minister of Economic Affairs, during his visit to Jakarta.

Supergrid

The development of a supergrid is also a key component of this collaboration. The supergrid is expected to improve connectivity between regions in Indonesia, such as Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara, and Bali.

With supergrid technology, energy can be distributed more efficiently, reducing dependence on potentially limited local energy sources.

“The supergrid will serve as the backbone of a more reliable and efficient electricity network, allowing renewable energy from one region to be used in another that needs it,” explained Retno Marsudi, Indonesia’s Foreign Minister, during a bilateral meeting in Helsinki.

Energy Efficiency

In addition to energy production, energy efficiency is also a primary focus. Finland’s advanced energy efficiency technologies can help Indonesia reduce energy waste and carbon emissions. This includes various sectors, from industrial to residential.

“An example of its application is smart grid and smart metering technology, which allows real-time monitoring and control of energy usage,” explained Dr. Juha Sipilä, an energy researcher at Aalto University, Finland.

Educational Cooperation

Educational cooperation between the two countries is also expected to enhance technical capabilities and knowledge in the green energy sector.

Education and training provided by Finland to Indonesian experts will ensure effective and sustainable technology transfer.

“With proper education, we can ensure that the technologies we adopt can be operated and maintained efficiently,” said Prof. Bambang Susantono, rector of the University of Indonesia.

Conclusion

The collaboration between Finland and Indonesia in the green energy sector promises not only technical and economic benefits but also broad positive impacts for the environment and society.

By leveraging renewable energy technologies, flexible gas-based balancing power plants, supergrid, energy efficiency, and educational cooperation, Indonesia is on the right path to achieving its Net Zero Emissions target by 2060.

This partnership also underscores the importance of international cooperation in tackling global challenges such as climate change.

“This is a concrete step towards a cleaner and more sustainable world,” concluded Indonesia’s Minister of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya Bakar, in the bilateral meeting.
