jfid – As most of the world is still in 2023, Australia and New Zealand are gearing up to be the first nations to welcome 2024 with fireworks.
Despite the New Year’s celebrations being overshadowed by conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, both countries continue to show spirit and optimism amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
New Zealand: The First City to Change Years
New Zealand is the first nation to celebrate the new year, with Auckland being the first major city to change years.
Thousands of people witnessed the fireworks display that emerged from the Sky Tower, the country’s tallest structure, and the light show in the city center.
New Zealand Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, wished her citizens a happy new year via social media. She said that 2023 was a challenging year, but also full of hope.
She thanked the New Zealanders who had cooperated to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic, which allowed the country to return to normal faster than other countries.
“We have shown that we can do extraordinary things together. We have shown that we can take care of each other, and we can make a difference,” Ardern said.
Australia: Sydney and Melbourne Shine with Fireworks
Two hours after New Zealand, it was Australia’s turn to welcome 2024 with fireworks. The Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House were the center of attention, with a spectacular and 12-minute-long fireworks display.
